As we are taking this phase of language and culture study seriously, we are also seeing that God is drawing people to Himself through us. Lourdes the Garcia’s Landlord is one of those people. She immediately began attending services and studying the Bible with the Gracias as soon as she was invited. We have been praying that God will send truth seekers into our paths. Lourdes was a definite answer to those prayers. It has been so exciting to speak with her and watch her grow as she is so eager to learn more about God and the truth that is found in the scriptures! Don’t we serve an awesome and powerful God?

We had our first small group and things went really well. We had 8 people show up (14 if you include our family). Yesterday during our group I read (John 1:1-14) in Spanish for the first time and then made a few comments about the text in Spanish. I also led my first song in Spanish (Santo Senor). I know these are small things but when your goals are to teach and preach in Spanish these things feel like milestones. My wife has been doing such a wonderful job serving the Mexican people with warm hospitality. I thank God for the wife He sent me. Lately I find myself reflecting on how much God can do when we throw our lives at His feet and ask Him to go to work! I praise God for all of those who support us in prayers. Please keep praying for us. We could not be here doing the greatest job in the world without you. God bless.

On July 6th I turned 35 years old. As the years have gone by my birthday has become just another day to me. This year was a special one because it was my first birthday celebrated in our new home (Mexico). Our teammates along with Doug and Sandy Holcomb spent the day with our family. We had one of my favorite meals, fajitas! In the evening two Mexican families came over and we celebrated my birthday again with coffee, cake, and fellowship. I had a wonderful birthday this year. Thank you Lord for blessing me. We also had another great opportunity to host people in our home. If you know anything about Latin culture soccer (or as they call it down here in Mexico “Futbol”) is a big deal. Our family was privileged enough to host a gathering in our home to watch the world cup soccer game. Not counting our family we had twenty one people in our home. The exciting thing was that there were two lost people who were able to experience the community of God. We cannot say enough about the wonderful fellowship we are experiencing here in Mexico. Isn’t hospitality powerful (Rom.12:13; 1Pt.4:9)?

Our team and the current mission team in Cuernavaca decided we need to have an English service so we can continue to be feed spiritually. As we participate in our small groups and church services they have been more about learning Spanish then devotion to God. We will have an English service every Tuesday at 4:00. The team offered me the opportunity to preach the first sermon. I really appreciated the offer as my biggest struggle so far has been not being able to participate in any preaching or teaching. This was a real blessing and my soul was lifted by the wonderful singing. I don’t think I truely understood how much the singing on Sunday mornings encouraged me until now. Our first service was held at the church building but as time goes on we will take turns hosting it in each others homes.

It some cases the Mexican culture can be very different and even seem a little unusual to us. There are also other things about the culture that are really enjoyable and make a lot of sense to us. As I had commented on in our last newsletter how Sunday is a full day of fellowship. Our third Sunday worshipping with the church in Cuernavaca we spent the entire day with some of the nationals (10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.). After church we went out to lunch and then spent time just sitting around talking and enjoying each other’s company. In the Mexican culture eating and spending time together has a lot of meaning. It is a time to forget about your busy schedule and all your worries. With the language barrier this was a slight challenge but it also showed us how in Christ Jesus language and culture cannot separate the bonds we share. As I think about how much relationships and spending time with people means in Mexico I think about passages in the book of Acts when the Christians were spending time in each other’s houses day by day (Acts 2:43-46).

Things are moving along slowly but surely! It took us a week and three days to find a house. We are trying to be patient as we are finding out how slow things work in Mexico. So far we have a couch, table, mattresses, and each other. We do feel our family is adjusting well. Our children have already been involved in a few youth activities, and we are getting around the city and getting many things done on our own. We have had the help of the current missionaries and our real estate agent (Juan Carlos) who has been extremely helpful. Our team has chosen to start language school on August 2nd. As husbands and fathers we felt June was too early because we need to be with our families in this beginning stage. For now we will be involved in a lot of informal language study. The last two Sundays we have been with the Spanish speaking brethren about six hours( Bible study, worship, and then fellowship). Dealing with cab drivers and people in stores and on the streets, it has been good practice for us. We praise God now that all three families have arrived safely in Cuernavaca. We know that only God could have brought these three families to this point. Amen! Please keep us in prayer as we continue on this journey of faith. We are praising God for all the supporters who have made our desire of taking the Gospel to Central Mexico possible. We could not have done this without you!! We NEVER could have done this without you!!

Our team has constantly pursued partners in our mission train-ing. Sunset International Bible Institute and Missions Resource Network have been the two biggest contributors to our mis-sions preparation. We used them as a resource to prepare our-selves for the mission field. On Friday April 16th M.R.N. Invited mission minded congregations, individuals, and missionaries from around the brotherhood to a missions banquet. There was around 300 people in attendance. It was really encouraging to see what the brotherhood has been doing to evangelize the world. It was also a joy to see other mis-sion teams that are preparing to enter the field in 2010. There were missions teams headed to Scotland, Ireland, Brazil, Tanza-nia, and of course Mexico.

One of the difficult things about going to the mission field is leaving behind family members who you love so much. During the month of March my Dad came to visit me. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to spent time with him and then say good-bye before leaving to the mission field. The best part was having the opportunity to study and discover God’s word together. It was a joy to sit around as a family and study and learn the will of God. Before my Dad left I was given an amazing gift from God. After all the studying and discussions on the spiritual well-being of my father, he decided he wanted to be baptized into Christ. (Rom. 6:3; Gal.3:26-27) The last passage we read together was “Col 2:12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead”. After reading that passage he said for me to“ fill up the baptistery! “He told me his clothes were packed and he did not have a change of clothes, but I said that is not an excuse . It was one of the best going away present I could have ever received. Don’t we serve an awesome God!

Food, Fun, and Fellowship. It just doesn’t get any better then that! This was an Easter to remember as we spent it with people who are very close to us. In the near future we will be leaving to Mexico, several of the families we have grown so close to while attend-ing Sunset International Bible Institute will also be leaving to ministries in vari-ous places. This was an-other wonderful experience that reminds us what a blessing it is to be in the body of Christ! Amen..
